The ship sheds at the port of Ostia
Lot 1343
C. Censorinus, 88 BC. As (Bronze, 26 mm, 11.40 g, 9 h), semuncial standard. [NV]MA POMPILI [ANCVS MARCI] Jugate diademed heads of Numa Pompilius, bearded, and Ancus Marcius, to right. Rev. [C•CENSO] / ROMA Two arches; beneath left arch, spiral column with statue of Victory holding wreath to right; protruding from right arch, prow with crescent above. Babelon (Marcia) 20. Crawford 346/3. RBW 1320. Sydenham 716. Some minor pitting and flaking on patina, otherwise, good fine.

This interesting departure from the basic reverse type with the prow alone shows the ship sheds at the port of Ostia, which were reputedly founded by king Ancus Marcius, while the column bearing a statue of Victory is thought to have been erected in celebration of a naval victory won by C. Marius Rutilus, dictator in 356 BC and an ancestor of the moneyer, near the harbor.
